Pocket Beagles are the "original" beagle. The larger beagles that you see today are a result of upsizing. They were bred with a herrier hound to increase size. This was done because they were such good hunters of rabbits. The hunters believed if they were bigger they could hunt bigger game. The Olde English pocket beagle is pure bred, not mixed with any other breed. They were called pocket beagles because they fit in the hunters saddle bags where they originated in England in the 1800's. There is a little over 5000 in the world today.
Olde english pocket beagles are not to be confused with miniature, teacup or elizabethan; those that are not registered with oepbr are most likely mixed breeds. Olde english pocket beagles are very rare and for that reason not all vets are familiar with this breed and do not realize that they are not the result of mixing breeds.
Pocket beagles are not bred from the runts of larger sized beagles. This would take years of work. The genetics for size is inherited from many generations. Yes-there are pocket beagle breeders who do breed from the larger sized beagle runts and have litters with small and the other large pups mixed. But they cannot be registered in the protective olde english pocket beagle registry.
There are many dog registries. AKC unfortunately does not register pocket beagles at this time. These papers only state the breed, there is no size or way of tracing genetic size with them at this time.
Pocket beagle colors: Traditional tri-colored, Chocolate,Lemon,Red, Ticked (black, blue, red, lemon), Silver/ blue.

(these are a mixed breed, we're all for adopting mixed breeds, but don't like seeing false advertising!)
